Outlook Plugin

Send the email you are currently reading straight to the Blue Lantern Email Threat Analyzer — without leaving Outlook.

The Blue Lantern EML Exporter is an Outlook add-in that captures the open message as a .eml file and submits it to the analyzer using your API key. The threat report is then available in your Account Overview.

Requirements — Outlook for Windows, Mac, or the web, with mailbox API version 1.5 or newer. You also need a Blue Lantern API key.

Step 1 — Download the Manifest

Save the manifest file to your computer. You will hand this file to Outlook in the next step.

Download manifest.xml

Step 2 — Sideload the Add-In

The exact steps differ slightly by Outlook host. Pick the one that matches your client.

Outlook on the Web (or new Outlook for Windows / Mac)

  1. Open Outlook in your browser at outlook.office.com.
  2. Click the Settings (gear) icon, then General → Manage add-ins (or Get add-ins).
  3. Open the My add-ins tab.
  4. Under Custom add-ins, click Add a custom add-in → Add from file….
  5. Select the blue-lantern-outlook-manifest.xml you just downloaded.
  6. Confirm the security prompt to install.

Classic Outlook for Windows

  1. Open Outlook.
  2. Go to File → Manage Add-ins (this opens the same web manager).
  3. Follow the same My add-ins → Add a custom add-in → Add from file… flow above.

Step 3 — Configure Your API Key

  1. Open any received email in Outlook.
  2. Look for the Blue Lantern group in the ribbon and click Send as EML.
  3. The task pane opens on the right. Paste your Blue Lantern API key into the Enter API Key field and click Save.

Your key is stored in Outlook's roaming settings, so it follows your mailbox across devices and is only transmitted to api.bluelanternsecurity.io.

Step 4 — Send an Email for Analysis

  1. With any received email open, click Send as EML in the ribbon.
  2. The task pane confirms which message will be exported. Click Send.
  3. You will receive a job ID in the task pane.
  4. Find the completed report in your Account Overview, or follow the link in the task pane once analysis finishes.

Troubleshooting

  • "No API key found" in the task pane — Open the task pane's settings section and paste your key. Generate one from the API Access page if you don't have one yet.
  • The Blue Lantern button isn't on the ribbon — Make sure you opened a received message in Reading view. The button only appears for the ItemRead form. If it still doesn't appear, remove and re-add the manifest.
  • Manifest validation error during sideload — Confirm you downloaded the full file (it should be roughly 4 KB of XML starting with <?xml version="1.0"). Re-download from the link above if needed.
  • 401 / 402 / 403 response after submitting — Your API key may be expired, or the account has no active Seat License. Check your plan on the Account Overview page.

What Gets Sent

The add-in only sends the contents of the email you explicitly submit. No background scanning happens. Standard Email Threat Analyzer retention applies — see the Privacy Policy for the full retention schedule.
